How to: Clean and Care for Roscan Hardwood Cutting BoardsFrancais

Roscan harwood boards

There is no particular treatment needed prior to using any Roscan end-grain butcher blocks or maple hardwood cutting boards, since all our “Au Naturel” wood boards are treated with a natural oil finish for maximum protection and long lasting beauty. Regardless of the cutting board you own, cleaning right after use is suggested. Here are some instructions on how to clean and care for your Roscan ”Au Naturel” hardwood cutting board:

  • Sanitizing wood boards is a delicate process comparing to glass or synthetic boards. However, wood cuting boards have some natural antibacterial properties. In fact, because of hardwoods tight grain and small pores, bacteria do not tend to reproduce as much on wood boards as on plastic boards.
  • Cleaning your cutting boards with care will lengthen the life of them a few more years. It is not recommended to use harsh detergents of any type. Instead, use a well diluted bleach or vinegar solution that you will spray on the board. Also, you can rub a small quantity of coarse salt on the work surface with the use of a sponge or a cloth. Never use a steel brush, as you may damage the smooth surface.
  • Wooden boards should never be placed in the dishwasher and should never be immersed or soaked in the water for long periods of time. Wood is naturally porous and will absorb water, during the drying process it can warp and crack if exposed. You can use warm soapy water to clean them, just be sure to dry them off right away.
  • Every few months, or whenever the surface seems dry, oil the wooden cutting board with mineral oil and wipe the excess off with a clean towel. This helps bring out the natural wood grain.
  • It is not recommended to use sand paper on your Roscan wooden board or butcher block to take off stains or cut marks. The surface is unlikely to become smooth again and it will eventually dull your knives.

Thanks for buying Roscan cutting boards – we hope you enjoy using them.
