According to Lydia Warren from Mail Online, the traditional paper doily is selling like hot cakes and makes a strong comeback as home baking soars.

There was a time when no self-respecting cake stand was complete without one. And now the traditional paper doily – the ultimate symbol of gentility – is back. One popular kitchenware store has sold more than 17million of the decorative placemats since 2003. And thanks to the surge in popularity of cupcakes and home baking, sales are on the up.

Comeback: Dolies are selling well after a big increase in the amount of home baking – with one company offering them in a range of colours. While doilies, a sign of impeccable manners since the 1950s, used to be considered out-dated, people now enjoy their retro chic. To respond to this demand, last year Lakeland launched a ‘Truly Scrumptious’ range, comprising vibrantly coloured doilies in fuchsia, orange and yellow.

Matthew Canwell, the store’s buying director, said this modern style has added to consistently good sales.

‘We have recognized that there is a definite trend in doilies,’ he said. ‘We are adding more ranges to address this and they’re proving popular. There has been a renewed interest in afternoon tea and, in the last few years, sales of baking products have more than doubled for us. There is a further growth in interest this year.’ Manufacturers expect a boom in sales over the coming weeks as royal fans hold tea parties to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Baking supplier Funky Muffin added that doilies gave a respectable edge to any tea saucer or cake stand. A spokesman for the Surrey-based firm said: ‘When a doily goes on the table, people are reminded of their childhoods and birthday parties. That’s very special.’ Doilies are made from white paper cut in delicate patterns.

They were designed as a cheap alternative to crochet linen doilies found in the homes of the aristocracy since the 17th century. Sales rocketed in the 1950s as a reaction to post-war austerity and the doily quickly became a symbol of upward social mobility.

People tend to think that maintaining a healthy life style is costly. They might be right! However, when there is a will there is a way. Here a 4 affordable ways that keep you healthy:

1. Physical Activities: if you don’t want to pay for a gym, make time to walk, run, dance or play sports with a group of people.

2. Sleep: The average human adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep per day. A study at the Boston university found that individuals who sleep more than 9 hours or less than 6 hours have high probability of becoming diabetics.

3. Food: It is imperative to be aware of the nutritional ingredients when buying your food. Some of the activities used to conserve food can cause allergies and discomfort therfore such consumptions must be avoided.

4.Preserving food: When conserving your food, make sure that the containers you use are BPA Free. BPA is a chemical used in their manufacturing of plastics and act as a hormone disruptor. An affordable and healthy alternative is Eraware food containers as they are BPA free.

In our hectic modern world many people have little or no time to spend enjoying their meals with family. Spending more valuable time with loved ones during meal times can be simple.

Have a Plan – Know what meals you’d like to make for a few days in advance before you go grocery shopping, that way you won’t have to make as many trips and spend less.

Prep-Work – Take an hour aside on a Sunday afternoon to prepare some of your meals. Even small things like having pre-chopped veggies can take the load off on more stressful days.

Keep Your Tools on Hand – Want to make a quick side salad but can’t remember where you put your spinner? Have all the materials you need at your fingertips.

Switch it Up – If you’re getting bored with your routine spaghetti Saturdays and turkey Tuesdays do not hesitate to try a few new recipes to keep things interesting. After all, any experienced chef will tell you it takes years of practice to perfect their signature dishes.

Ask for Help – Cooking is a great way to stay connected with your family and can be a fun activity to do together. At the bare minimum, it’ll give everyone a little distraction from technology for a while!

The lettuce you buy from the supermarket may or may not be clean! You definitely can’t just start eating it! What you need to know about lettuce is how to wash it and to make sure that it’s edible and appealing. In reality, it only takes about 4 minutes to wash and dry lettuce.

Roscan’s 5 easy steps to wash lettuce:

1 Cut the head of lettuce away from its root with a knife and separate the leaves.

2 Remove the core with a paring knife in order to wash.

3 Break it apart with your hands or a knife.

4 Place the lettuce leaves in the Roscan Stainless Steel Colander. Run cold water over the colander washing away soil and sand.

5 Gently shake the water off each leaf and place them one at a time on paper towels or a clean dish towel. Blot the lettuce dry with some more paper towels.

Your lettuce is now washed and prepped to be dressed with crunchy vegetables for a nutritious salad! Roscan’s durable rust resistant stainless steel colander is great for all your rinsing, draining and straining needs.

Happy Salad Washing!!!

Ingredients

4 c. (1 32 oz. box) organic chicken stock
4-5 garlic cloves, diced
1 lb. of baby carrots, diced
1 8 oz. package of Shirataki fettuccine-shaped noodles
1/2 cup pulled white meat roasted chicken
Pinch of salt
1-2 pinches of pepper
1-2 pinches of Herbs de Provence

Directions

1. Add the broth, garlic, carrots, salt, pepper and Herbs de Provence to a large saucepan and bring to a light boil. Lower the heat and cover for 10-15 minutes, or until carrots and garlic are soft.

2. Drain the liquid from the package of Shirataki noodles and run cold water over the noodles for 2-3 minutes to remove any scent from the water they are stored in. Then add them to the pot. Since they are long, you may want to use cooking shears to cut up the noodles into smaller pieces once they are in the pot. Put the lid back on and simmer for 5 minutes.

3. Add the pulled chicken, simmer for another 5 minutes and serve.

1 (2 pound) butternut squash – peeled, seeded and cut into large chunks
4 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
1 onion, peeled and chopped
1 (2 inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
1 1/2 quarts water, or amount to cover
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Directions
1. Place the squash, sweet potatoes, onion, ginger, and garlic in a large pot (I roast my butternut squash & sweet potatoes in the oven before placing them in the pot – makes for a sweeter & richer flavor) . Pour in enough water to cover the vegetables. Bring to simmer over medium heat, and cook until vegetables are tender and can be easily pierced with a fork, 30 to 45 minutes.
2. Remove pot from heat. Place soup in batches into a blender or the bowl of a food
process. Pulse until smooth. Return soup to pot. Season with
salt and pepper to taste .
