What is Bisphemol A (BPA)?
BPA is a chemical used in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. BPA is found to be a hormone disruptor that can cause many diseases and health complications later in adulthood. Plastics containing BPA can release the chemical when they are washed or heated at high temperatures, allowing the chemical to leach into our food or beverage and lead to ingestion. BPA can also be found in cans lining resins.
To reduce your exposure to BPA:
- Avoid plastic containers with No.7 recycling label identified with letters PC because they are made with Bisphenol-A.
- Do not microwave/heat polycarbonate plastic food containers.
- One clue that a plastic ware is made of polycarbonate : crackling occurs as the material is being heated or put into the dishwasher.
- Reduce your use of canned foods and drinks. Buy products packaged and labeled as BPA-Free containers instead.
- Use safer plastics including polyamine, polypropylene and polyethylene when it comes to storing food and beverages.
